Granadilla Vine – Passiflora Edulis
Passiflora edulis is a vine species of passion flower native to southern Brazil through Paraguay and northern Argentina.
They grow exceptionally well in the South African Climate. This vigerous vine will grow up your trellis very quickly, thus sufficient space should be given. However one can prune the vine to the shape and areas they so wish to.
Granadilla vines are very rewarding as they grow quickly with little care and fruit very early in their life. We make sure we have a granadilla vine growing on every wall in our yard.
Granadilla is grown for its sweet, seedy fruit, commonly called passion fruit.

Granadilla vines
- Granadilla vines are very strong and vigorous growers and require firm support in the form of a trellis, fence, wall, arch or gazebo to grow up against.
- Granadilla vines have a deep root system and need very good drainage.
- Choose a spot in full sun (or morning sun only in very hot areas) with shelter from heavy winds.
- Granadillas like to be kept moist, but absolutely hate being waterlogged, so good drainage is key and a clay soil will not be suitable.
- Thorough and deep watering is particularly essential while the fruits are maturing.
- Â If the soil is allowed to dry out during this stage, the fruit might shrivel up or fall from the plant. In early spring remove all dead and diseased growth and thin out overcrowded and unwanted growth.
- Cut healthy, shoots back by about one third to promote new, strong growth and abundant fruit.
