Mushroom Starter Kits
It’s easy to get started. Make sure that you have a good spot set out for them which is out of direct sunlight and that has good airflow. The kit does not need to be in the dark so on a kitchen counter works well. Adding a tray under is recommended so that any overspray is caught and keeps the area clean.
Mushrooms are rich in the B vitamins: riboflavin, niacin, and pantothenic acid. The combination helps protect heart health. Riboflavin is good for red blood cells. Niacin is good for the digestive system and for maintaining healthy skin.
Antioxidants help protect the body from damaging free radicals that can cause conditions like heart disease and cancer. They also protect you against damage from aging and boost your immune system. Mushrooms are rich in the antioxidant called selenium.
WHAT’S THE WHITE STUFF ON MY GROW KIT?!!
When you purchase your mushroom grow kit, it would already be covered with this white sometimes fibery or cotton wool like stuff. This is called Mycelium.
Mycelium can be compared to the rooting system of the mushrooms and the mushroom ( fruit) can be compared to the plant. This makes mycelium essential when growing your mushrooms as they transport the nutrients from the kit ( substrate) the fruit ( your mushrooms).
Mycelium that is spread over the kit( fully colonised) also protects the kit from contamination.
Tip-when making the initial cut in your mushrooms kit, cut on the stop where the mycelium is the thickest which is usually on the top of the kit
- In order to produce the best quality mushrooms possible you must take good care of your fruiting kit. Here are some tips to keep your fungus happy:
-use a sharp clean knife
-keep away from pets and children
-do not touch the young mushrooms with unwashed hands
-prevent drying by avoiding drafty or overly bright locations
-Mist 2-3 times daily
-Use distilled water. If using a humidity tent, also spray the inside of the bag. Never let your mushrooms dry out.
-Harvest: to harvest place your hands on the base of the mushroom and twist them free from the substrate.
